Kohanga Reo: Nurturing Tamariki (Ages 0–10)

The words Kohanga Reo translate to “language nest”, a fitting name for an initiative built to preserve te reo Māori (the Māori language).

Our Kohanga Reo Māori cultural training gives tamariki a safe, supportive, and inspiring space to grow up surrounded by language, culture, and connection. The program blends play-based learning with cultural immersion, using songs, games, and storytelling to help children develop a sense of identity and pride from a young age.

Learning the Māori Way

Every aspect of Kohanga Reo draws from traditional Māori teaching values like ako (reciprocal learning), manaakitanga (kindness and respect), and whanaungatanga (relationships and connection).

Children don’t just learn words or customs, they experience them daily. Through karakia (prayers), waiata (songs), and movement, language and culture become a natural part of their world.

Cultural Expression Through Performance

A highlight for many tamariki is taking part in Kapa Haka, performing traditional songs and dances in Māori attire, often decorated with traditional paint. These moments are powerful expressions of pride and unity, teaching children the beauty of teamwork and cultural storytelling while strengthening their connection to heritage.

Kaha: Growing Strength in Rangatahi (Ages 10–18)

As children become young adults, their relationship with culture and identity deepens. Kaha, meaning “strength”, helps them channel that journey through performance, learning, and community.

This Māori cultural training program for youth encourages rangatahi to explore their Māori and Polynesian roots through movement, language, and art. Every session is hands-on, interactive, and full of opportunities for personal expression.

Program Highlights

The Kaha experience includes a variety of engaging activities such as:

• Traditional Māori songs and dances – Learning and performing well-known waiata and haka that carry deep cultural meaning.
• Poi and tī rākau – Interactive traditional games using poi (soft white balls on strings) and wooden sticks to develop rhythm, coordination, and teamwork.
• Powhiri and marae customs – Understanding Māori welcome protocols, roles, and the significance behind each step of ceremony.
• Pepeha creation – Learning to express one’s origins through personal pepeha (introductions) and creating a framed keepsake to take home.
• Language and storytelling – Exploring te reo Māori through flashcards, songs, and games, while hearing powerful stories about the creation of the earth, the first woman, and our connection to the natural world.
• History and heritage – Learning about New Zealand’s Māori history, the Treaty of Waitangi, and core cultural values like tapu (sacredness) and mana (integrity and authority).
• Ngā Atua and kaitiakitanga – Discovering the Māori gods and the idea of humans as kaitiaki (guardians) of the land and environment.
