At Ascend Youth, we believe cultural understanding is the key to building strong, confident young people. Our Māori cultural training programs are designed to immerse tamariki (children) and rangatahi (youth) in the richness of Māori language, heritage, and values, giving them the tools to connect deeply with who they are and where they come from.
From the early learning environment of Kohanga Reo to the youth-focused Kaha program, Ascend Youth provides a pathway for cultural awareness, creativity, and belonging.
The words Kohanga Reo translate to “language nest”, a fitting name for an initiative built to preserve te reo Māori (the Māori language).
Our Kohanga Reo Māori cultural training gives tamariki a safe, supportive, and inspiring space to grow up surrounded by language, culture, and connection. The program blends play-based learning with cultural immersion, using songs, games, and storytelling to help children develop a sense of identity and pride from a young age.
Every aspect of Kohanga Reo draws from traditional Māori teaching values like ako (reciprocal learning), manaakitanga (kindness and respect), and whanaungatanga (relationships and connection).
Children don’t just learn words or customs, they experience them daily. Through karakia (prayers), waiata (songs), and movement, language and culture become a natural part of their world.
A highlight for many tamariki is taking part in Kapa Haka, performing traditional songs and dances in Māori attire, often decorated with traditional paint. These moments are powerful expressions of pride and unity, teaching children the beauty of teamwork and cultural storytelling while strengthening their connection to heritage.
As children become young adults, their relationship with culture and identity deepens. Kaha, meaning “strength”, helps them channel that journey through performance, learning, and community.
This Māori cultural training program for youth encourages rangatahi to explore their Māori and Polynesian roots through movement, language, and art. Every session is hands-on, interactive, and full of opportunities for personal expression.
The Kaha experience includes a variety of engaging activities such as:
At Ascend Youth, our approach to Māori cultural training goes beyond education, it’s about building identity, confidence, and community. Each program helps young people connect to something bigger than themselves, developing respect for Māori culture while encouraging understanding of other cultures as well.
Our educators create environments that are inclusive, inspiring, and culturally grounded. Every session is a chance to learn, share, and celebrate both individuality and togetherness.
Storytelling and song have always been at the heart of Māori education. At Ascend Youth, we bring those traditions to life through dynamic and creative teaching methods.
From learning how to perform the haka with confidence, to exploring the stories of ngā Atua, our students don’t just study culture, they live it. Through performance, art, and language, they build skills that last a lifetime: confidence, empathy, and leadership.
While our programs specialise in Māori cultural training, Ascend Youth is proud to welcome participants from all backgrounds. We value diversity and believe that cultural understanding strengthens communities.
We also acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands on which we work, and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. Every program is a reflection of that respect and commitment to shared learning.
Why Cultural Training Matters
For today’s youth, cultural awareness is more than just learning traditions, it’s about understanding identity and values. Māori perspectives teach young people about balance, connection, and respect, lessons that extend far beyond the classroom.
Through Māori cultural training, tamariki and rangatahi gain a sense of pride, belonging, and purpose. Whether it’s the nurturing space of Kohanga Reo or the empowering environment of Kaha, every young person who takes part leaves with a stronger sense of who they are and what they stand for.
If you’re passionate about giving young people the chance to connect, learn, and grow through culture, explore the Ascend Youth Māori cultural training programs today.
From early childhood experiences to teenage leadership, we’re helping the next generation rise, proud, connected, and strong.
